OPEN WIDE! NATION'S DENTISTS ADDRESS ACCESS

Low-income children to benefit from annual
Give Kids A Smile! events

CHICAGO — February is National Children's Dental Health Month and on Feb. 1, more than 51,000 dental professionals will provide free dental services to more than 500,000 children from low-income families, at more than 2,000 sites nationwide. It's all part of the American Dental Association's (ADA) sixth annual Give Kids A Smile program, which offers educational materials, screenings and, where possible, free dental care such as cleaning, fluoride treatments, fillings and even more intensive care.

* Please note : I have no money to help people. All I have is my resources. Although I would love to help people individually , I can only do this on a limited basis , as I am struggling with my own issues. I will continue to help as much as I can , in as many ways as I can , but please try to find your information from my pages and do some research before you ask me for individual help.  Asking me for help when the resources are right there is inconsiderate of my hard work and my own tiring medical conditions. If I don't reply to your message , it is because there are tons of other people who need help too.

Thank you , soulight

People need more than just having their teeth pulled.

It is time that  ALL people who live in the United States have COMPLETE dental care benefits. The 15,000 plus people who have accessed this page need an answer NOW.

Some facts may be dated in the following , but I can say without doubt , THE SITUATION IS MUCH WORSE TODAY.

FACTS ON ORAL HEALTH IN AMERICA

  • 22 percent of adults report some form of oral-facial pain in the past six months.
  • Oral and pharyngeal cancers, which are primarily diagnosed in the elderly, are diagnosed in about 30,000 Americans annually and 8,000 die from this disease each year.

  •
  • Only 58 percent of the rural population had visited a dentist in the previous year, while 67 percent of urban residents had done so, according to a study utilizing 1999 National Health Interview Survey data.

  •
  • Large metropolitan areas have about 62 dentists per 100,000 population; most rural counties have only about 29 dentists per 100,000 population.

  •
  • Rural adults ages 18 to 64 are nearly twice as likely as urban residents to have lost all their teeth.

  •
  • Rural adults (33 percent) are more likely than non-rural adults (26 percent) to have untreated dental decay.

  •
  • 58 percent of the rural elderly (over age 65) had not seen a dentist in the previous year compared to 47 percent of the urban elderly.

  •
  • 38 percent of rural elderly and 27 percent of urban elderly had not seen a dentist in the previous three years.

  •
  • 72 percent of rural and 66 percent of urban elderly lack dental insurance.

  •
  • 37 percent of rural and 27 percent of urban elderly are edentulous (have no remaining teeth).

Oh man I feel for you, cause in the same boat, but lucky .the department of health offers free dental to the disabled  here in Hawaii but actually these sort of programs I feel should be not only be for the disbaled but also for people who work but have low income its actaully in way in my oppinon greed at these prices that are charged for this .  evereeything is over inflated I know at one time the department of health here charged 10% and that would cover evereything, even gold fillings, but no one ever saved their money to pay. my piont is that would be  a fare amount to pay ,the dentisist would still make a dam good living and more people could take care of their teeth.I know I had a bite gaurd so that I would not grind my teeth and it costed $400.oo for a peace of plastic that the value was about $10.00 but because it was a health device and most people whio get dental work are coverd by insurance if lucky through their job so they sock it to the insurance. this is why we have inflation and the world is going bank rupt. any way try even calling the universaities and tell them that you are willing to let staudents work on your teeth under the instructer did this once years ago and they did .call the health department call many dentist and work a deal you would be surprissed if nothing else I would go to the yellow pages and just call one dentist after the other and explain if you have a job and have worked their awhile tel them you can pay up front what ever you can if they would carry the financing themselves and just pay your payment every month or have alittle each month done I know though 22 k my god any way hope something works for you how much are dentures I had thought about them tell I found this place cause I too had a mouth full of decay r_minjares@live.com or maybe you could convince a dentist thhat if he did the work he could write it off on his taxes or advertise in the local community that he fixed this mans teeth after years of horrible pain explain that yopu had been sufering grand depresssion over the years and neglected your teeth cause you whwre so depressed that you where in days most of the time..Good luck

Hi reinneedshelp

You mention in your post that we have probably heard alot of what you have to say , which is true , but that doesn't matter . It doesn't matter what you have done in the past . What matters is how you do in this moment . Right now . If you do your best in each moment , then that is what counts.

I am so sorry about your pain . People who deal with constant pain are just worn out all the time and it tends to consume their lives . I know from experience. I wish I could help pay for your dental expenses . I hope that for many people on Aidpage. The problem is that I am in the same boat.

I know you said you tried everything , but please make sure you go through all the dental pages. Maybe there is something you missed.

I am keeping you and your situation in my prayers.

Hello. I am 27 years old and i live in the Kansas City area. A father of 4 (2 of them from my wife's previous marriage). I spend most of my time working abd paying the bills, trying to stay afloat in todays society. I know many of you have probably heard alot in which i am about to say. I am in severe ammount of pain all the time. I wasnt the best person at keeping my teeth healthy growing up. I never really saw the importance of it until it was to late. I smoke and i drink allot of coke. I know these are very bad for my teeth, but i have recently quit smoking and cut down on caffine to almost nothing, but its still to late.

I have visted a dentist already and was quoted about 22,000$ to fix all my dental problems. I need 9 teeth pulled (2 are wisdom). Ill need 4 crowns a partial denture and a few other things i dont remember. I applying for the dental insurance and dental loan things that i could, but to no avail. My credit isnt worth squat, so i got turned down by them all. I cant be around anything that has metal agianst metal or metal agianst just about anything. Hot and cold hurt alot and my teeth ache so much it makes me head hurt 24/7 and even down into my shoulders. I know my mouth is inficted, but there isnt anything i can do about it. I cant afford much because i have to many bills. Ive already given up so much of myself for my family i would at least like to be able to smile when i go out somewhere without worry someone is going to be grossed out or me feel embarrased.

I feel so lost at what to do. I think of what i have done to myself with my lack of care in my youth and just cry sometimes. I dont care what has to be done. I just want to have no pain anymore. Im coming close to the point of downing a bottle of alcholhl and starting to pull teeth.

You've done a GREAT job providing information.  I appreciate all your research.  The info you posted regarding dental health in rural areas is accurate...based on what I see on a daily basis, I suspect it is worse than many realize.  There are young children with serious potentially life threatening problems who will never see a dentist.  Many young people in our area cannot get medical or dental care...I don't care what agencies or orgs say, the fact is, they cannot get it regardless of income.

I'll pass along a link to your dental information in hopes it may help someone.

71. Worthless posted on Apr 15, 2008

I am worthless as proven by the way my life was destroyed by dentists, PMI/Delta Dental, and the legal system of attorneys in the state of Florida.

Full details to a certain point (when I gave up) are on my website www.socialexperiment.info where I tried to get help from others in society, but was ignored except for hate emails saying I was a scam. www.dentalwarning.info.

After Dr. Larry Dunford of Cape Coral bonded my front top four teeth and my bottom two front teeth together into one large tooth, Dr. Jeffrey Rubin, then of Fort Myers, pulled the bottom two teeth and installed a bridge.  He did this in ONE visit with no molds, no temp bridge, nothing.  The bridge was pre-made and too large for my mouth.  The visit took 6 hours.  He filed down my top front teeth to try to get the bridge to fit my mouth, but ended up saying he would just crown them so they would come out and over the bridge.  I was in severe pain as the bridge did not allow my mouth to close and was loose.  He kept giving me pain medication to the point that I suffered kidney failure and ended up in the hospital for almost a month on dialysis.  The insurance company, PMI/Delta Dental backed Rubin and refused to allow me treatment or to replace the bridge unless one of their network dentists agreed.  Each one THEY SENT ME TO said it was fine, though their assistants were always shocked at the appearance and how loose it was (they couldn't do x-rays because I couldn't bite).  Then I went to one of their dentists under my middle name and saying I had no insurance.  The dentist immediately said the bridge was too large and mobile and had to come out.  THEN PMI/Delta Dental agreed I could get it replaced and tried to get me to sign an agreement for an amount of money if I said I would never speak of this again.  I refused to sign.  When the bridge was finally removed, it was seen that the two anchor teeth Rubin had prepped were less than 1/4 an inch long and thin as a needle.  They had to be removed.  The year and half with that bridge also caused ALL of the bone under that area to deteriorate.  I had to undergo a painful bone grafting that cost a lot and did not take.  I now ive in severe pain 24/7, have my front top four teeth veneered for appearance, though I cannot bite with them, have 4 bottom front teeth missing and am about to lose the next two, have a partial in the front that falls out and cannot cover the entire bone loss, so I cannot eat or drink without that coming under the partial and spilling out.  I tried throughout this to get an attorney but they all told me Florida law made it too expensive.  Now the 2 year limit is gone so I can never sue.  I have spent over $50,000 on all of this, lost my job, cannot work due to the pain, do not qualify for any disability, have no insurance at all now, and am about to lose my home.

I tried everything to help myself and to warn others, but nothing was ever done.  I cannot live like this any more, so I'm just trying to leave behind some part of my pain to warn others so they don't trust dentists.  Most are ONLY out for money.  And in Florida, they know they have little to worry about with lawsuits - though Dr. Rubin had settled countless lawsuits in the past and received many disciplinary actions from the Board of Health.

I can only thank the Lord that I am not a violent person or these people would be dead if this had happened to many other types of people.  Instead, they have killed me.

As I see no way of fixing my pain, no way of restoring my life, I can only have the strength to not suffer any more.

I don't wish this upon anyone.  In 3 years I went from being successful after years of hard work, to having nothing.  No one should think that a toothache killed me.  Dr. Jeffrey Rubin killed me.  So did Delta Dental and PMI and they are hurting others as evident by the other complaints and stories out there about them.

Goodbye to you all and I do pray you get help before your life ends like mine.

froggy ,

I am so sorry that nothing has worked for you . It is hard to ask for free dental services . On the other hand , what right do the "people" have to put you down for the situation that you are in ? NONE ! All of us should have the same respect and care as anyone else .

hopelessly ,

I wish that I did have a magic wand to help and instantly you would feel better.

_______________________________________________________

MY RANT OF THE DAY :

I hate the condescending way many of the people who claim that they are in helping professions are really only in the profession if it is easy for them to help .

It just is deplorable the way our health system is in this country. ALL of the people who live in the U.S. should have access to healthcare and dental care . The "access" that we ( I am including myself , as I am below poverty level and I need dental care too )  do have  is worthless when it comes to dental care. Many times the medical care is just as inaccessable.

I so wish that all the people who claim that they understand what it is like to be in this situation would have to be in our situation themselves. Let them have a toothache with no relief for just a couple of hours and they will scramble to make an appointment because THEY don't want to suffer . Imagine having to go through the agony of your dental problems magnified by many problem  teeth that are aching , not just one.  With no relief for days. No one to go to for help . No money for the right medications . Not being able to go out  of the house because our society has certain shallow standard of how we should all look.

Sometimes I just HATE this world. The imbalance of right and wrong . The people who "have" and the people who "have not" . It isn't fair. It isn't right . It should be criminal to neglect our fellow human beings this way .

Yes , I know that the world is a fallen world and life isn't fair. Yes , I know that for all the people who come on Aidpages with life challenges that miracles DO HAPPEN sometimes . People DO  FIND HELP . Not always , but many of us that try to help wish it was always.

I will continue to try and find solutions to our dental dilemas. Plus , I will continue (as I know many other Aidmates do) , to keep as many Aidmates in  my prayers that I can , because I do believe in prayer and the power of prayer.

It is just that sometimes I wish no one had to suffer in this world.

so heres the update. I have endlessly emailed places I thought were low income or free dental service places and the ones who did actually respond refused to help. I guess next week I will start calling and asking, it's just so uncomfortable ya know. Hi, Im poor and in desperate need of your services, will you please give me free dental since I cannot afford it myself? lol Update on my teeth, not doing any better, getting worse by the day. The left bottem wisdom filling completely fell out so now theres just three sides of my tooth standing which I predict will break off and make it even that much more painful in the next day or two. My bottem right wisdom is infected and pus and now the gum has started growing over it so my whole right side is swollen and that includes my throat. Just soft food and no hot or cold for me. I struggle to even swollen my own saliva (spit). Im living off of my vicodin and listerine. Im just freakin hopeless, theres no hope, it will just get worse and theres no one to help me. I know there are so many more people out there that feel teh same as I do, theres just no getting past the pain. I just want to crawl under a rock and fade away sometimes but I still have to stay alert and watch after my two babies. Anyways, just feeling depressed tonight, Im still praying for a miracle but doesnt look good for me. Hopefully the next person that feels like I do will find the help out there somewhere.

I am new to this website. It is 8am here and I have been up in pain since 5am. I have been living with the pain for months now, living off of the hydrocodone I have left from a surgery. A couple of months ago I had severe pain in my left side of my mouth and my husbands mother paid for me to go to the denstist, they said it was an infected absess in my wisdom tooth bottem left side. They had to pull the tooth right next to it becuase of an absess and they put a filling on the new absess on my wisdom tooth and told me Id have to have it surgically removed since it started growing into my jaw. I left and havent been able to go back since I am not covered and very low income family. Three days ago the right side of my mouth started a familiar pain and now Im certain that my wisdom tooth on my right side has dome the same thing, absess infected. While gritting threw the pain of this one somehow my filling broke (which dentist told me it would do since it was temporary) on my left side so now Im in much pain in both sides of my mouth, bottom two wisdoms. It is effecting my ears, throats and gives me migraines. I have a 2 yr old and a 7 mo old and it just kills me ever time one starts to cry or yell. This makes me so irritable and hopped up on pain killer sjust to try to sleep but I cant even do that becuase I wake up in so much pain. Im trying to find a low income place or free dentist would be great here in dallas tx somewhere but havent found much luck, even with all the links on here. Im not sure what Im going to do, I feel so hopeless and hurt. I just want to grab and pair of pliers and yank my teeth out from the pain but I knwo its going to have to be surgically removed since my jaw is interferring so yea, hopeless with that too.

Hi arosieworld,

I believe that I contacted you by PM , but if I didn't , I hope that you have found some sort of relief for your dental challenges.

You are so right about the painful condition of so many of us who have no dental coverage. The medical and dental coverage for low income , disabled , and seniors in this country are DEPLORABLE !!! Let's see if any of the canidates coming up for election are SINCERE about their support for reform in these areas.

When ever I come to your web site I just break down and cry I know how painful this is for everyone. I have so much fear when it comes to loosing my teeth. I lost my first tooth at 18 and I am 27 now. I have just pieces for my back teeth and lost my first smile tooth a few months ago. When I was young I worked as a model and had some eating issues but even before that I had hereditary bad teeth. Now my front teeth and are going and I am so very afraid... Only my eye teeth still have their backs and I am so scared to smile. I love to smile, I have a wide smile and I'm a friendly person. This is changing my life and its changing me. I HATE IT. I don't want to leave the house or date or work with people. I feel like I'm losing all the good in my life just because I can't afford help. I just moved to Columbus Ohio and I hear the have some help here. If you have any advise or anything at all that could possibly help please please let me know.

I am a 52 year old woman, and I am homeless and I am staying with some nice folks for a few weeks, but I need to find a dentist or an organization who can treat me free of charge or for a small fee.  I have a tooth that needs surgical extraction.  I had a bacterial infection called cellulitus on my face due to the tooth being infected and I really need help before the infection comes back. I went to the hospital they treated me with antibiotics.  I can't afford an oral surgeon.  But I do need help...if someone knows of anyplace in Florida I can get this help, please let me know...my email address is debporritt@gmail.com

Thanks & God Bless

I have severe periodontal disease (gum measurements 7,8, & 9).  I am 50 years old and going through menopause.   We have no health insurance because we cannot afford it.   I did not go to the dentist for about six years, but eventually had to go due to a toothache.  That is when the dentist told me I needed to see a periodontist.  I finally was able to afford the consultation at which time he told me it would cost 11,000 for the surgery I needed.   That was over a year ago.  My condition continues to worsen and I am petrified that it will lead to other serious health problems at my age.  What can I do?

There are so many people needing help with dental challenges right now . It is hard for me to contact everyone. I will spend the next 2-3 days working on the dental pages and addressing some of the requests for assistance  specifically on those pages. At the time , I can't contact everyone personally . I hope that I can find more resources out there to help all of us who are struggling with painful and serious conditions with our teeth.

I am a 37 year old woman from Virginia who has suffers from Periodontal disease. I lost my first tooth at age 22. I now have only 17 teeth left and they are being held in by soft tissue because of the bone loss. I’ve recently seen an oral surgeon who specializes in dental implants. He has told me that if I do not get the implants that the bone will continue to decrease to a point that I will not even be able to wear dentures. The cost to have the implant work done is over $30,000. I have also gone to VCU and the cost of the implants there is over $15,000. Surprise that my dental insurance has told me this is cosmetic and my health insurance will not cover it because they said it is a dental issue. Could you please guide me to where I might go for help in paying for dental implants. Thank you for any help.

I am a single mother in Orlando, Florida.....I had my first child at 14 & the last one at 17. When I was pregnant with the first one, I didn't get enough calcium, so ever since then, my teeth are crumbling out of my mouth. All dental work has crumbled as well. I am 29 now and have a "train-wreck" in my mouth...it's extremely painful and I can't eat or smile normally. I did not qualify for medicaid, but my children did. I am desperate to fix my mouth. I am not afraid of the dentist, just too poor. What can I do, where can I go for help? I looked at your web page, but I didn't find much info that would help me. Please help me.

Tabbysoto, I will try to help . You say all the links tell you nothing about low income , no insurance people? That doesn't make sense , as that is what they are all about. You are right when you think that many links are for younger people , though. It is really unfortunate that the dental care in this country for low income and/or people with no insurance , is deplorable. I have already tried to find the information about Baylor in Dallas ,and I too had trouble finding anything. I will look around some more and get back to you if I find anything. soulight

Hi, I appreciate the fact you say ,, we need to help ourselves.. I totally believe in that... however, those links do NO help in finding assistance in dental care that my son needs.. he's not a juvenile. He's 28... he became a drug addict when he lost his twin brother.. he is now a former drug addict.. I would not help him til he helped himself and became clean... he's been working and been sober for 6 months now.. he's lost alot of his teeth,, he needs help with what he has left... All of the links,, tell me nothing about assistance for low income no insurance people... I know Baylor in Dallas has a program,,can't seem to hook up this information... can you help me with the contact for this assistance? Thanks for any help,, Tabitha Soto-Crocker
